March 17-18, 2018 Opening Round of the AMA US Eastern MX Championship Series at Jimmy Weinert Training Facility in beautiful Maysville, NC. Just a little background history about the track owner and trainer. "Jammin’ Jimmy" Weinert was a Motocross and Supercross champion during the beginning of the sport in the USA. In the 1970s, "Jammin Jimmy" won 22 AMA nationals races and 3 AMA championships during his 11 year professional racing career. On November 4, 1973 he was the first American to win a Trans-AMA race in Houston Texas.
"Jammin Jimmy" was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 1999. As a young teenager I followed Motocross Racing and he was an inspiration for me to be involved in Motocross.
The weather was perfect for Saturday practice and Sunday's racing. One of the many highlights of the day was
"The Junk Yard Dog" John Down and his son Ryan's motos in Open AB All Star Class. John took the holeshot in both motos with Ryan eventually passing John for the win. Ryan looks to be following in his Father's footsteps,
I believe we will see him on the National Circuit soon.
Isabelle Thibault from Quebec won both motos in the Women 12+ class. She was absolutely killing it jumping the huge triple that many riders did not jump.. The sand track was challenging on the 50cc classes, but the riders showed determination and the heart of future champions.
Round 11 0f The AMA Pro Am-US Eastern MX Series-Victory Sports Ultra Series-District 13-29 Championship Event scheduled for this Sat-Sun Sept 29-30 was moved to Lake Sugartree Park in Axton Virginia. A severe thunderstorm dropped 7-8 inches of rain in 3 hours Saturday night the week before washing out some of the road and major damage to the bridge leading to Birch Creek. We are thankful for Ryan Smith and the Lake Sugar Tree staff to take on the race with less than a week’s notice.. They did an awesome job of prepping the track while battling several nights of severe thunderstorms with torrential rain fall to have it ready for Saturday Practice.
Every time I walk down to the starting line I think of all the races held there. MX Nationals were held at Lake Sugar Tree from 1986 to 1991 and in the 1970’s Trans-Am events were held there as well. There is so much history there. Thank you Ryan Smith for all you do to keep the sport of motocross thriving in Southern VA.
Awesome weekend at the second round of the US Eastern MX Championship Series held at NC Motorsports Park in Henderson NC March 23, 24, 25, 2018
This event was the South East Area LL Qualifier. Racing both days was intense. Mark and his crew did an outstanding job of prepping the track after Saturday night’s rain and snow. Track was on point all day with lines everywhere.

Round 10 of the AMA US Eastern MX Championship Series, US Eastern-Mega Series Shootout! The weather forecast did not look promising with a 90% chance of rain for Sunday. Races got under way without any rain until about the 9th moto with rain falling until intermission. After some discussion it was decided that conditions were good to start the second set of motos. Remember Motocross is supposed to be Rain or Shine! Thankfully the rain held off for the second set of motos. Track conditions were a little more slick then muddy making it difficult to get up some of the steep hills. That being said, it is always good to ride in challenging conditions. You might struggle and get frustrated, but at the end of the day you are a better rider and no matter where you finished you should have a feeling of accomplishment. Pat your self on your back for riding out of your comfort zone. That is really what motocross is about, pushing your limits and challenging yourself.
Pro Sports MX has to be one of the most beautiful tracks in the country. Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains the scenery is spectacular. Elevation changes are unreal, with a huge uphill jump named Walker’s Mountain, it is not for the faint of heart!
This track should be on everyone’s must ride list!! Pro Sports MX is extremely easy to get to, as it is just off the interstate.
Victory Sports and their crew did an outstanding job with Round 10 of the AMA US Eastern MX Championship Series.
April, 14, 15, 2018 Round 4 and 5 of the Liquid Performance US Eastern MX Championship. Ryan and the Lake Sugar Tree crew did an excellent job of getting the the track prepped and the races underway to beat the severe weather coming in. Lots of fast riders and great racing. I always feel humbled when I am at LST, so much MX history there. When you line up at the gate, you could be at the same gate as Roger DeCosta, David Bailey, Jeff Ward, Damon Bradshaw or any of the many other MX Legends that have raced there.
Hats off to Ryan Smith for continuing to keep LST a premier facility.
June, 30, July, 01, 2018 Round 7 of the Liquid Performance US Eastern MX Championship Awesome weekend at the 2018 at North Carolina Motorsports Park in Henderson NC, Round 7. Mark and his Crusty Crew did a terrific job keeping the track in shape despite the the temperatures in the 90s all weekend. Saturday ATV racing was exciting with a good ATV showing. Sunday racing was intense as the heat! The turn out for the 50cc racing was awesome. It is impressive watching how fast they can go on a track with holes and big braking bumps created by the full size bikes. Line choice is critical for them. A big thank you for all that braved the heat this weekend!!
April 7, 8, 2018 Round 3 of the Liquid Performance US Eastern MX Championship-AMA Pro AM-NC State Championship Series at Devil's Ridge MX Park in Sanford NC had some rain on Saturday, promoter Kent Cameron made the call not to practice and saved the track for the AMA US Eastern-Pro Am-NC State Championship on Sunday and it was a great call as the Gary Semics designed track was a big hit for this years Championship Event. The 450 Pro Am winner went to Tickle on his Sport Durst Power Sport Honda, part of the famous Tickle Brothers MXers out of Cary NC, The 250 Pro Am went to the Trianglecycle.com-Total Control-Blue Crew Yamaha rider Luke Neese, again another legendary name in the sport of MX, son of the great Jim Neese. Great turnout in all the amateur classes as well.
Round 12 of The AMA US Eastern MX Series at Lake Sugar Tree, Axton VA Oct 27-28.
I had a wonderful weekend at the annual Lake Sugar Halloween Bash. The costume and pumpkin carving contests had some very creative entries. The children’s excitement filled the air with anticipation of who the winners would be!
A big thank you to Triangle Cycles for the generous donation of the prizes. A light rain just before the Saturday night Super Cross tested the skills of the riders and made for some action packed racing.
Sunday’s lovely fall weather made for an absolutely amazing day of racing!
Ryan and his crew did a superb job of prepping the tracks and running the event as always.
Have a safe and Happy Halloween!!
Terrific weekend at historic Lake Sugar Tree for Rd 8-9 of the AMA US Eastern MX Championship Series and D13-29 Gold Cup Championship. The weather was beautiful for a weekend of racing. Tracks were in awesome shape as usual. Ryan and his crew do a superb job of preparing the tracks for racing.
The History of Lake Sugartree is amazing.
One of my many memories is of David Bailey, Gary Bailey’s (The Professor) son. He joinded Team Honda in 1982, managed by multi-time World Champion Roger DeCoster. That season, Bailey was a member of the Motocross des Nations team, and helped the team to its second consecutive victory. David joined the team as an alternate for 1982 National Supercross and Motocross champion Donnie Hansen.
In 1983 he won the 250cc Supercross and National Championships, and was awarded the Wrangler Grand National title. He also won the United States motocross Grand Prix (USGP) at Unadilla and repeated as Motocross Des Nations champion. The next season, he added the 500cc National title, won the King of Bercy title and led the USA to victory in the Motocross Des Nations for the third straight year. Bailey would win many more major races in the next few seasons, most notably two more MXDN titles, and coming out on top of a duel with teammate and fellow champion Rick Johnson at the 1986 Anaheim Supercross. Bailey rode his Honda CR500 to the win at the Motocross Des Nations that fall. The performance by the US team is regarded as one of the most dominant in history.
Lake Sugartree is a living legend, there is so much more MX history to write about in than I can do in this one post.
A big thank you to all who came out and raced Saturday night and Sunday.
